Essentially there are two steps to performing LASIK surgery - the creation of the corneal flap and the ablation of the cornea’s surface to correct the refracrive error. Traditional LASIK calls for the use of a bladed instrument called a microkeratome to create the corneal flap. As technology has advanced, LASIK surgeons have moved away from using this bladed instrument in favor of laser technology called a femtosecond laser to create this flap. The use of this technology has resulted in safer, more precise corneal flap creation.
